Teresa Carreño (1853-1917)

Teresa Carreño’s debut performance in New York in November 1862, at the age of nine, brought her immediate critical and popular acclaim. One year later, the child prodigy from Venezuela played for President Lincoln in the White House. After 1866, Carreño spent most of her life and career in Europe, returning periodically to the United States on concert tours. As an adult, Carreño became recognized as one of the greatest pianists of her time, and she continued to perform on the concert stage until just weeks before her death.
