Harriet Lane (1830-1903)

The orphan niece and ward of James Buchanan, Harriet Lane served as White House hostess when her bachelor uncle was inaugurated President in 1857. A popular young woman of immense charm, Lane brightened the executive mansion with her presence and guided its social life with considerable aplomb. When the Prince of Wales visited Washington in the autumn of 1860, Harriet Lane’s hosting of the attendant festivities earned her praise from all quarters.
