Model of the USS Hartford


The USS Hartford was the flagship of Rear Admiral David G. Farragut during the Battle of Mobile Bay, August 5, 1864. The Hartford was 220 feet long and 44 feet wide, with a speed of 13 1/2 knots. It carried 42 guns and had a crew of 304 officers and enlisted men. At Mobile Bay, the Hartford, along with fourteen wooden ships and four monitors, engaged in battle with the Confederate ironclad Tennessee and three wooden ships. The outcome was the surrender of the Tennessee and her crew.
