The idea and seed money for a Smithsonian Civil War Web site originated with David Umansky in 1999, then the Director of Communications, Office of Public Affairs, Smithsonian Institution. Marc Pachter, Director of the National Portrait Gallery, adopted the project and enthusiastically supported its development. CivilWar@Smithsonian opened on January 4, 2002.
